You never, ever want to partition an ssd. Besides having separate drives for recording and samples makes it way easy for doing backups. You can get by with recording to a large ssd system drive but that's all you'd be doing - getting by.

People only do the record-to-ssd if they either are going portable (think laptop) or are on a very tight budget. Having a separate drive even with ssd's is still a good thing. What's Avid's stand on this? Any helpful advice is welcome, thanks. Click the view’s icon located in the upper left corner of the view and choose Enable Floating. In that case I'd be considering a new 256Gb SSD for the OS.

I'm just about to assemble a new Windows PC with an i75820k and 64gb of RAM, and would like to know if it's absolutely necessary to have a separate recording drive.

For a couple of months now, I've been running PT12 on a 1tb 850 EVO in an older system with 3 partitions for Windows 7 Ultimate, PT sessions and VI content, without any problems so far. Given the speed/random access nature of SSD's and the fact that there's no head to hunt for data, is a dedicated audio drive still necessary for PT12+? I'm inclined to think no, but I'd appreciate some input from those who have experimented long enough with this to be able to give definitive answers. It's been quite a while since I came this way.Please forgive me if this topic has been addressed elsewhere.
